Atsuko Tanaka
Electric Dress was around two hundred painted bulbs on a wearer who could be burned or shocked by it. Tanaka spent the next fifty years painting its wiring.

Electric Dress is a garment made of roughly two hundred incandescent bulbs and neon tubes, hand-painted in nine colours and wired into a single mass. Tanaka put it on. It was heavy, it got hot, and the wiring was close enough to her body that a fault would have been a serious matter. She stood inside it and it lit up, and she disappeared.
That is the literal event. A person walks into a structure of their own making and stops being visible as a person. The dress does not adorn her; it replaces her outline with a coloured shape and a nest of cable. Every reading of it — the body consumed by industry, the woman turned into an appliance, the self erased by its own display — is available at once, and Tanaka never picked one.
After Electric Dress, Tanaka drew its circuitry — the bulbs as circles, the wires as the lines connecting them. Those diagrams became paintings. Then they became a language she used for nearly fifty years: dense fields of coloured circles joined by tangled lines, over and over, in every scale.
She did not escape the cage. She learned its grammar and spoke it for fifty years.
This is the ending the issue has been walking toward. The apparatus that swallowed her did not get abandoned or exorcised. It got transcribed, and then it got fluent. The enclosure became a vocabulary — which is a different thing from a cure, and more durable than one.
The scale-shift instinct in Electric Dress shows up again decades later: an ordinary material pushed far past its domestic proportions until the ground around it changes register. A 2007 reconstruction of an earlier Tanaka piece, shown at documenta 12 in Kassel, laid a sheet of fabric flat across a lawn — large enough that visitors gathered around its edges the way a crowd gathers around any unexplained event outdoors.
In photographs of the dress, find her feet. There is usually a small gap at the floor where a person is still standing. In the paintings, find a line that leaves the canvas edge — the circuit does not close. Both are the same detail: the system is not sealed, and something gets out.
Tanaka ends the issue because she does not resolve it. The trap stays a trap; she simply learns to draw it. That is the register this whole publication is aiming for — a door found inside the situation rather than a rescue from outside it.
That is the issue. Seven women, one procedure, and no agreement between them about what it is for — which is the most useful thing this constellation has to offer. Nothing further loads. There is one door left, and then you are done.
