Women in Art: Quiet Obliteration · Chapter 06 · Hold absence
Chiharu Shiota
Shiota asked the public to send her their old keys. Then she hung them in a room on red thread, above two boats.

Shiota put out a request and people sent her their keys — around fifty thousand of them, from all over. Keys to houses they had left, to cars that were gone, to doors that no longer existed. She tied them into a ceiling of red thread and hung the whole weather system above two old wooden boats, and called it The Key in the Hand.
A key is the most specific object a person can own. It fits one lock. Once that lock is gone the key becomes pure evidence: proof that there was a door, with nothing left to open. Fifty thousand of those in one room is not a decoration. It is an archive of thresholds that have closed.
This is the chapter where the issue stops being about one interior. Kusama's field, Martin's grid, Bourgeois's Cell and Asawa's wire are all rooms made by one person out of one person's material. Shiota's room is made out of strangers, and you walk into it.
Proof that there was a door, with nothing left to open.
She has done versions of this with suitcases, with dresses, with a burnt piano, with hospital beds. The recurring move is the same: take an object whose entire meaning is that somebody used it, then suspend it in a medium that will not let you get close. You are inside the memory and you have no access to it. That is a fairly exact description of standing in someone else's grief.
The technique is the same wherever she works. In The Soul Trembles, her 2019 survey shown later at Brisbane's Gallery of Modern Art, whole rooms were strung this way — black and red thread thickened into a weather that visitors walked through rather than around.
Find one key. Look at its wear — the shine on the shoulders, the shape of the head, whether somebody filed it. Then try to hold in your head that there are fifty thousand of these and every single one had a person. The failure to hold it is the work.
Shiota moves the issue from interiority to shared memory without softening anything. She is also the clearest case of material memory in this constellation: the meaning is carried by objects that were used by people we will never meet.
